CAPSULE ONE | TITLED "FOR ALL"
A CAPSULE DESIGNED AND MADE IN MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA
Project Thirteen’s first autumn | winter instalment is an ode to a timeless wardrobe staple - the sweatpant. our first capsule intends to focus on the proportions and quality of the pant whilst complimenting it with our final key touches. titled “for all”, this capsule poses as a staple collection for Project Thirteen and was meticulously designed and hand made in Melbourne for friends, family and everything in between.
With Autumn | Winter being our first official seasonal collection I wanted to create a garment that would ultimately become an item that would help sculpt the brand’s silhouette - that being exaggerated and boxy. In undergoing the process of sampling and making mistakes in Melbourne where prices are typically higher than your average Chinese supplier, this meant that the stakes were higher and hence attention to detail in all aspects of making this garment was critical. With three iterations of the pant - I came to this and felt they were finally ready to be released.
Making garments in Melbourne is no joke. With traditionally higher sample costs and larger bulk production costs due to low order quantities and greater labour fees, it was ultimately worthwhile to make my first capsule in Melbourne as it enabled me to oversee the whole process and ensure that when the time came to move, the entire process from start to finish wouldn't be unclear. This also meant that I could oversee the whole process and ensure that there were no shortcuts being taken and that I was also supporting the many local families involved in producing these here in Australia.
Being defined as a more straight - legged silhouette these pants are a contemporary take on your standard sweats and this garment aims to serve as a piece that can be dressed up or down. This serves to ultimately guide the brand towards a more elevated look without becoming overly high - fashion. The exaggerated white drawstrings add a contrasting element and help again elevate the pants - distinguishing them from other sweats you’d find on the market. The drawstring also brings the garment to life and adds a more bold and oversized element to the pant. The pant also has a great weight that’s breathable yet is the coziest cotton you’ll find on the market. With the pant being 100% cotton this ultimately makes it more cozy and durable making these sweats easily stylable.
For our first drop I headed to a warehouse that had funnily enough been recently abandoned by an international textile company. The turquoise and green blended floor really brought the shoot to life and separated it from its standard white studio counterpart. Using someone that wasn’t used to modelling was definitely a challenge but none the less I think the team and I managed to pull off something of a photoshoot - what do you think?
Using medium format film and digital cameras alongside a camcorder was also a lot of fun. I’d never really used a camera before so it was basically trial and error as we progressed through the day. With that being said, the limited photoshoot support made me quite resourceful and becoming a more film-orientated photoshoot brand is definitely a mission for the future.
Undergoing this process of sampling and making mistakes in Melbourne was something that was extremely valuable and as the brand moves forward the mission remains to constantly improve and iterate on new and existing garments. With a change in suppliers, I seriously cannot wait for this next drop. Now with a proper drop schedule, greater supplier capabilities, better cameras, actual models and of course more refined silhouettes and better materials this next drop is going to be insane and I seriously cannot wait to show it to you all.
